Miracle weight loss solution: just add water?
How many times have we heard that magic phrase, “Drink plenty of water?” Whether it’s coming from your doctor outlining the keys to weight loss (yeah, yeah…. get plenty of exercise, count your calories, drink your water, blah blah blah), or it’s your local fitness expert touting the importance of hydrating, we’ve heard it all before.
But now it seems like that piece of wisdom has some clout in the form of science. Who would have thought?
Scientists have reported the results of a new clinical trial that confirms it: drinking just two 8-ounce glasses of water before meals will help people lose weight. It’s sort of the not-so-surprising weight-loss elixir, as reported at the most recent National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.
According to sciencedaily.com, this new trial offers the proof in the, uh, pudding.
“We are presenting results of the first randomized controlled intervention trial demonstrating that increased water consumption is an effective weight loss strategy," said Brenda Davy, Ph.D., senior author on the study.
"We found in earlier studies that middle aged and older people who drank two cups of water right before eating a meal ate between 75 and 90 fewer calories during that meal. In this recent study, we found that over the course of 12 weeks, dieters who drank water before meals, three times per day, lost about 5 pounds more than dieters who did not increase their water intake," Davy said.
So the question becomes this: can I somehow work this strategy into my everyday lifestyle? It sounds simple, but sometimes I just don’t feel like drinking water. Why? Perhaps my brain is rebelling against my doctor. But if that ever-elusive magic weight-loss cure involves something so easy and completely free, well maybe it’s time to try it. Cheers!
